By definition, they are paparazzi shots of the US film industry's finest, but on closer inspection Anne Cabrie's portraits reveal not only secrets about the subjects themselves but of the American film industry as a whole. Take Uma Thurman(above), snapped at an opening for one of the Kill Bill films- Tarantino and his mother, a background shadow to her projected light, perfectly revealing the muse-like relationship between the two. Cabrie chose to exhibit her previously unseen work to coincide with the opening of the Melbourne International Film Festival and also to"reveal another side of America, a whole other world quite aside from the unpopular politics of today". Perhaps the other side she talks of is her subjects' inherent heroic qualities, such as Christopher Reeve, in a rare snap breathlessly flying through life.
